Validation of Actiwatch for Assessment of Sleep-wake States in Preterm Infants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the Actiwatch with behaviorally determined sleepe wake state in preterm infants and to explore the influence of postmenstrual age on the accuracy of Actiwatch. Methods: A prospective and comparative research design was used. Twenty-four preterm infants with postmenstrual age ranging from 28e38 weeks were studied. The infants were studied for 2 hours between two feedings. Infant's sleep and wake state was measured every 30 seconds using Actiwatch and the Anderson Behavioral State Scale simultaneously. Results: Actiwatch demonstrated high agreement, sensitivity, and predictivity of sleep state, when validated with the Anderson Behavioral State Scale at the setting of high and automatic activity thresholds, and was not influenced by the infant's postmenstrual age. However, lower specificity and predictivity were found in the wake state, and influenced by postmenstrual age. Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that high activity thresholds are the most accurate for determining sleep state in preterm infants, and health care professionals must take the limitations into consideration while using the Actiwatch to assess wake states. متن کاملEvaluation of the Effect of Nest Posture on the Sleep-wake State of Premature Infants
Background: Premature birth is a major cause of infant mortality in developed countries. Newborns confined to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are in a rapid stage of brain development. As such, sleep plays a pivotal role in the proper brain development of newborns. However, this developmental aspect is often disregarded due to the lack of information. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the...
متن کاملValidation of the Early Feeding Skills Assessment Scale for the Evaluation of Oral Feeding in Premature Infants
Background: Feeding difficulties are common and important in premature infants. In order to identify neonatal feeding difficulties, clinicians and nurses require assessment tools to conduct an objective evaluation of infant oral feeding (breast/bottle-feeding). Early identification of infants with feeding difficulty is critical to implement appropriate therapies and op...
متن کاملAssessing Sleep Disturbance in Low Back Pain: The Validity of Portable Instruments
Although portable instruments have been used in the assessment of sleep disturbance for patients with low back pain (LBP), the accuracy of the instruments in detecting sleep/wake episodes for this population is unknown. This study investigated the criterion validity of two portable instruments (Armband and Actiwatch) for assessing sleep disturbance in patients with LBP. 50 patients with LBP per...
